On October 16, following a comprehensive evaluation by a panel of endemic experts, the Level III alert against the highly pathogenic bird flu in Panyun District was lifted.

The alert was issued by the Panyu District Bureau as part of the district's contingency plan against bird flu on September 17, when the Ministry of Agriculture announced the outbreak of the highly pathogenic bird flu at Sixian Village, Xinzao Township, Panyu District. Health authorities also implemented emergency measures to prevent the spread of the endemic to human population.

On October 9, agricultural authorities lifted the quarantine on the affected area after a seven-day monitoring by the Panyu District Health District found no new cases of infection.
