As the annual Mid-autumn Festival is approaching, the Young Volunteers Association in southern China's Guangzhou city are calling on the locals to donate moon cakes to the impoverished people.
A staff member from the association says that it is the third year in a row that they are organizing such an activity to help the lonely elders, the street kids and other people who are in poverty.
Last year, they received over 1,500 boxes of moon cakes, as well as stationeries and living supplies from the locals. All of the donated items were sent to the city's welfare center, seniors' home and other aid centers.
"Although many families have excessive moon cakes, there are other people who don't have any moon cake for the festival," says the association.
They expresses that this year they will send some volunteer representatives as usual to visit the families and individuals who are in poverty and bring the donations to them.
The Mid-autumn festival, or moon festival, is one of the most important festivals in China, second only to the Spring Festival. The Mid-autumn festival is a time that all Chinese try to get together with their family members. Moon Cake is the traditional food for the day. The festival occurs on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. This year's Mid-autumn Festival will fall on September 25.
